Do you know of Sargent Andrew Smith? His mother, a widow, came to Northern Ireland from Scotland at the end of the 1800s to work in a mill. Andrew was born here, probably at the family home was Courthouse Square, Ballyclare. Did he live or did he die in the trenches? This is his story.

I’m looking at a beautifully embroidered postcard. It shows the sun rising out of a blue sea with PAX (pax vobiscum – peace with you) across the golden sun. Below reads: 1916 New Year. This is history, a card sent from the trenches of the First World War to Mrs. A. Smith living at The Courthouse Square, Ballyclare. It’s from her son Andrew, a sergeant in the 12th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, 36 Ulster Division, British Expeditionary Force, France.

The story is a complex one. The late Anne Whittiker, costume designer at the Lyric Theatre had a theatrical chest of materials, all the glitz required for plays and musicals, When she died, her son Paul passed the box to Roma Tomelty, actress and founder of Centre Stage Theatre Company, but it was only recently that Roma got to the bottom of the treasures and discovered a bulky parcel. “I opened it and to my astonishment there were 26 postcards from Andrew to his family, most to his mother. I think Anne was probably given these because of her interest in embroidery which she studied at art college.”

Roma brought the cards to the Somme Museum and they thought there was a memorial plaque in a Methodist Church in Ballyclare. I am grateful to one of the congregation, Mr. George Dodds, who kindly went to the church in Main Street to check and indeed A. Smith is recorded alongside colleagues from the area who fought in the Great War of 1914-1918.

Obviously no details of the war itself could be written about but on one Home Sweet Home card he records:

Dear Mother I received your parcel all right last night Sunday but had to give most of it to my chum as I was going into hospital today Monday with my teeth, I broke them in the trenches. Hope to be discharged tomorrow Tuesday and join my unit Wednesday in the trenches. Will write again A.

Most of the cards are written in pencil, some few in pen. Andrew sent a short note on 1st January 1919 to his sister Robina saying; Having a jolly good day.
