Horrific Scenes At Belfast Grand Opera House

Blooming marvellous. A young nerdy boy brings a strange plant into the florist shop where he works. The shop is on Skid Row so there are no wealthy gentlemen buying their dates button holes or bouquets. In fact, for our young man, Seymour (Sam Lupton) the girl assistant Audrey (Stephanie Clift) and the big bluff owner Mushnik (Paul Kissaun) it’s time to shut up The Little Shop of Horrors.  Not good. Then Seymour places the weird plant in the window of the shop and people start coming in: what is it? where did it come from? ‘Oh, and while I’m here a dozen red roses please.’ Everyone thrived, including the plant Seymour names Audrey ll after the girl he’s so in love with. She is in a relationship with Orin (Rhydian) who abuses her and as he is a dentist he has lots of ways of abusing people.
Of course, Audrey ll has to be fed but forget Baby Bio, what he likes above all else is blood. He grows with every drop Seymour squeezes out of cuts on his hands, he begins to talk, he even eats people to satisfy his hunger.

The two would be lovers finally realise their feelings and bond but like Romeo and Juliet theirs is a horrific demise but it would be unfair to give the game away. As for the plant? Well cuttings are taken and sold all round the world, every home should have one was the feeling, a disastrous decision as it turns out.
The music, the singing and the band are great, there’s a lot of shoo-bop and a touch of Rocky Horror even a hint of Jesus Christ Superstar at one point. Lupton and Clift are very convincing together and I loved the three Skid Row girl ragamuffins who were always on hand to keep the story moving along. Great movers and singers. And the men behind Audrey ll – take a bow.
What a plot! This piece of cult theatre is fun, colourful, full of energy and from the traditional drum roll as the lights dim to the awful last gasp, it’s high protein, like a musical comic book unfolding before us and the audience loved it.
If there is a moral to this bloody tail perhaps it is don’t over feed your house plants, they just might take over.  Well worth seeing.

The Joy Of Music

What a delight it was last night to listen to the Ulster Youth Orchestra playing in the delightful surrounding of the Ulster Hall.The sweeping strains of Gershwin’s Cuban Overture, great gusto and strains of samba.  Saint-Saens Havanaise with soloist Ioana Petcu-Colan in her gold shoes and mellow violin and a virtuoso performance by the young man on castanets! Next was Tchaikovsky and Swan Lake Suite well known and something to sway to, so well known it was possible to dance it in the mind’s eye.  After the interval Rachmaninov and the Symphonic Dances made up a really fascinating evening.  Watching the young musicians, some who have been struggling with exam results in recent days and others still studying, it was obvious that they were well rehearsed and conductor Garry Walker teased the best from them.  The timpani section were really entertaining as they moved between their instruments and a special cheer at the end for the young man who  manned the huge gong for the last notes of the Rachmaninov.  He had to run from his drums across the stage picked up the striker and made his unique noise then, to dull the last note, stuck his knee up against the surface with great aplomb.  Forgive my layman’s language!  The exuberance of the orchestra was matched with the response of the audience, four ‘curtain’ calls and great whooping from their young admirers, I expect most of them musicians themselves.  We have a great musical future in Northern Ireland with musicians of this standard.  Congratulations to them and to their tutors.

The French in their infinite wisdom have reversed their decision to ban the Burkini.  Praise be.  The stupidity of the whole things is amazing and resulted in quite a backlash with sand being scattered  across the street connecting Hyde Park and Knightsbridge as women hurriedly formed a “beach” outside the French Embassy. Beach balls, ice creams and  placards held aloft against Islamaphobia and in support of women, and to protest against the decision of 26 towns in southern France to ban the Burkini.  And it worked.

For goodness sake, what the hell does it matter what anyone wears on a beach if anything at all. And as for those French policemen forcibly stripping a woman of her modesty as she sat by the sea on a lovely day, that is criminal and someone should be chastised for their actions.

A wee small glass of wine

Lunchtime. “Will you have a glass of wine?” my companion said. “No thanks, driving.” “Not even a wee small glass?” the waitress tried to persuade me! A shop: returning some faulty goods. “Will you fill in your wee name here, and your wee address there, and have you a wee e-mail?” I kid you not.
It’s quite fascinating when you begin listening to what we say.

I love Danny Baker on a Saturday morning on Five Live, his expression is “Man Alive”, I count how many times. Also on Five Live Steven Nolan is wont to say, “Thank you So So much Sir,” very formal. When I was broadcasting on Radio Ulster apparently my habit was saying “So” all the time. I think these are all thinking-time tactics.
I’d a friend who would ring me up and ask me to say exactly – apparently I said ‘eggs-ectly’ and he’d go off in fits of laughter. The innocent are easily amused!
Ever cheerful Frank Mitchell forecasts his forecast at six o’clock saying: “I’ll have it in full when I come back in 20 minute-ssss.” And whose is the voice inviting us to watch programmes on UT-Veigh?
Madness to cut good programmes like the 10.30 p.m. news. There’s no Ulster Television any more, there’s no UTV any more but please you people sitting round the board room table, just remember there is still an audience here and we need our friends on the box.

Pointless Dancing To A Jaffa Cake

Isn’t it funny how Usain Bolt can be a hero one day and a villain the next.  So he parties as hard as he trains – with the same specular  results.  There always have been camp followers and there always will so nothing’s new.  If his long suffering girl friend ditches him, he will deserve it and if the girls around town want to spend time with him, that’s their business.

The most daft story of the week must be the ‘Bake Off dunk-off’.  Pages of tabloids filled with nonsense about whether or not you should dunk a Jaffa Cake.  These are not my favourite biscuit and Bake Off is certainly not top of my list of television programmes – on a power with Strictly Come Dancing and only slightly ahead of pathetic Pointless.  I don’t like Strictly and I don’t care for Ed Ball who seems to be the glamour boy this time round.  The two simpering girls who introduce it really annoy me and the theatrics of the panel are just juvenile.  You will notice I am not in good for today!

 

Making Music Open The Doors Of Communication

 

As a boy, Dr. Michael Swallow OBE was a chorister at Westminster Abbey and then Magdalen College Oxford, however, at the end of his schooling he was torn between a career in music or in medicine. Although medicine won, his passion for music continued and an interest in music therapy enabled him to combine neurology, rehabilitation and music.
This was born out when he established the NI Music Therapy Trust in 1990. Renamed ‘Every Day Harmony’, this respected charity is working specifically with people who find communication and interaction difficult because of learning and developmental disabilities as well as physical disability. In NI around a dozen music therapists working for Every Day Harmony divide their time between in a variety of centres, home visits, schools and hospitals.

“When I say I’m a music therapist the reaction is often – what a lovely job,” Emma Hamer told me. “Well, I agree but not in the way they think – it’s not a singalong, it’s carefully structured sessions to build self-esteem and communication skills.”
Certainly there’s a place for entertainers who go into care homes and hospitals and perform songs from the shows but they are not music therapists, it’s a happy time and fills in an afternoon but for professional therapists there’s a long training period and constant working with clients who trust them.
As there’s no course available here, Emma Hamer spent two years training to Masters level in Cambridge to become a clinical therapist and a member of the Health and Care Professionals Council which regulates health, psychological and social work professionals.
“My job is where science meets art and it’s a valued service, available on the NHS in England but not in Northern Ireland.”
Maybe things will change following a scientific study at Queens where researchers monitored children and adolescents with mental health problems and found that music therapy increased their ability to communicate. Leading the study, Professor Sam Porter said this is important at a time when these young people will be leaving school to look for employment and heading towards dealing with mature social issues. “Could it be integrated into main stream health services? It’s important to have evidence and it was the largest trial in the world conducted with this population and music therapy.”

Dealing with end of life care, mental health and physically disabled clients, and especially working with children, can be very emotional so counselling is available but the therapists support each other and learn from each other’s experiences. Their’s is a dedicated profession and they get results.
I was especially impressed with one young client with mental health issues who was severely depressed and self-harmed, her arms are scored with scars. After time spent working with her therapist, she wrote words describing her confused and painful life, then she set them to the Beatles music ‘Let It Be’. She’s proof that music therapy can open the mind, engender courage and allow achievement. In her song she sings:
“Looking to the future, I see nursing as a life for me, make peoples hurt stop, make them free. Going home, Getting better, Wanna be free, Wanna to be me, Find ways to survive, Just wanna to be free.”
She is now studying to be a nurse.
When a shy visually impaired man sat at the keyboard and played he suddenly became joyous and animated, lost in his ability to be independent. A father talked of his son who suddenly smiled during one session, it was a heart stopping moment, now he lives for those smiles.
A mother tells of her son who suffers hydrocephalus and how little response there is at home but now, after a long time of working together, he responds and sings along with his therapist. A major step forward and unlikely without music therapists like Emma Hamer, a gentle young woman who always loved music, has a music degree from Queen’s University then trained at Anglia Ruskin University. As she works she makes constant eye contact with her client, sometimes toe to toe for a physical connection as they make music together.
This is a very sensitive and confidential service, clients feel safe and are prepared to open up, they lead the way, make the choices. At a time in their lives when they are unable to take personal control. music therapy gives them the opportunity to express themselves.
Sadly, although supported by the health trusts, schools and other funders, in many cases organisations or individuals have to find the money themselves and, for this reason, those who could benefit from this service cannot.

Sometimes I just don’t want to turn on the wireless or the television news to hear the next story of disaster.  Italy and the earthquake is appalling, the bravery of the rescuers, the plight of those buried.  One sadness piles on another.  The Olympics were a colourful escape for a couple of weeks, will the paralimpics  be as successful?  I don’t mean in the medal tally which seemed to be the commentators main focus rather than the achievement of the other members of teams who competed but didn’t ‘go gold’.
