A Special Week For Bakers
Wednesday is D-Day, A-Day really as Andrew Smyth fights off the culinary skills of Jane and Candice and thanks to his family keeping tight-lipped about the result, we are all on eggs. The Great British Bake Off is going out with a fanfare but sad to think when these talented people who make up the programme didn’t know their future or lack of it at the time although I bet rumours were swirling round the studios.
So good luck to Andrew, although I’ve only seen the last couple of Bake Offs, I know he has given much amusement and gained respect for his approach to creating and enjoying his skills thanks to his mum and his grandmum’s interest and tuition.
Andrew, 25, is a Cambridge University graduate and now is carving out a career as an aerospace engineer in Derby and as Holywood is well known for turning out great champions, let’s cross fingers for another famous son.
Home Is Where The Heart Is
I spent a few lovely days in Donegal, in the hills above Dunfanaghy overlooking Tory Island. The only sounds were the leaves falling and gentle waves as I walked by the sea. What an island this is. This summer I was cruising in the Mediterranean,a couple of weeks sailing in and out of delightful ports visiting little towns, stunning cities, blue skies, strong sunshine and all that’s promised in the brochure. It was sensational, fun, lovely people to meet and gorgeous food to eat but … There’s no place like home, the gentle water colours of Ireland as opposed to the vibrant oils of Italy and Spain, and I’m a water colour kind of girl.
I brought back some interesting thoughts from Co. Donegal this weekend, apparently people wonder if the high rates of cancer around this area are anything to do with all the wartime ships lying drowned off the coast and their contents; and then the puzzle of the pink and black plastic wrapping for the grass for silage.
Now, thanks to one knowledgable local man I can let you into the secret. Over a hot whiskey or two he explained that the pink ones are for heifers (girl cattle) and the black ones are for the bullocks (boy cattle)!
Not a lot of people know that!!
Message From Breezy Willow
Act For Peace
. 
Today’s the day to think ahead according to the wonderful character that is Breezy Willow Kelly, the lady from Glenties who founded the Bake Bread For Peace day. This is Sunday, still time to go out and buy a few ingredients and get prepared to bake bread tomorrow which is International Day when, as Breezy explains, if we spend part of the day baking bread and sharing it, this would be a much more peaceful world.
As I report in tomorrows Irish News, two years ago Breezy woke up happy, turned on the television to catch up on the news and before the kettle had boiled for a cup of tea, her usual happy self was plunged into fear. “What I saw shocked me. I hadn’t looked at the news for a couple of weeks but I was floored by what was going on, wars, floods, famine, disease and disruption. Little children in distress, it was awful and it affected me deeply. But what could I do? I knew that to bring families together it was necessary to break bread and that gave me the idea. I put my thoughts on e-mail and got such a response that this international day was born and took off.”
This lady from Glenties Co. Donegal, a baker and story maker, started a worldwide movement two years ago and it has taken off big time, International Bake Bread Day for Peace is a challenge to all of us and there’s still time to go out, buy your ingredients and get your family and friends for a great big bake off. As Breezy says, “What must you break apart in order to bring a family close together? Bread of course.”
Breezy had a difficult growing up, sad and painful and the only place she felt secure was in the kitchen when her mother was baking bread. “She was a master baker and the smell of freshly baked bread was the aroma of peace, the smell of freshly baking bread hugged me and I felt safe. And now I want this aroma of peace to fill the world.”
She explains it began when she woke up early one beautiful July morning and couldn’t get back to sleep. “I got up, went down the stairs, filled the kettle and because I hadn’t seen the news for days I turned on the television to catch up. I was floored by what I saw, disasters, wars, sadness and despair. Even before the kettle came to the boil my happy mood had changed and I felt fear. I was frightened about the situation both at home and round the world. We’re all concerned about what’s happening globally, makes you feel you should be doing something about it but what can you do? Seems you can do nothing. So you do nothing.”
But then, as she thought about it sitting over breakfast in the kitchen of her Donegal home, she realised perhaps there is something we could do. “Breaking bread is the universal sign of peace. I thought, you know maybe we could get a few heads together to organise something so I posted an idea on my Facebook later that morning and the response I got was overwhelming and led to the creation of an international day.”
Last autumn Breezy decided to take to the roads with her message and she hitched lifts to Northern Ireland with her little dog Sheila, knocked on a few doors and was welcomed in. “I encouraged my hosts to ask friends, neighbours and family round and we had evenings of baking, singing, storytelling and dancing and it has slowly spread. I finished the tour on 8th December by breaking bread for peace on the steps of Stormont with some MLAs.”
She was well received in Northern Ireland because she feels there is such a desire here for peace.

I’ve lost all the information I’d gathered.”
This good woman with the soft Donegal voice deserves better, let me know if you have any information.
As the poet says, peace comes dropping slow but this movement is travelling into homes and businesses at a fast rate, not always to bring peace to world hot spots but to homes where there is distress, the smell of fresh bread is a healer and sitting round a table the best way to communicate and build bridges.
Breezy sums up her thoughts with this story. “There was a humming bird lying on the grass one day with its legs up in the air when an elephant comes along. The elephant says, ‘What the heck are you doing lying there Mr Humming Bird?’ The humming bird replies: ‘Well, do you know what, I heard the sky was going to fall in today so I’m here to hold it up.’ ‘How do you think a wee buck like you could hold up the sky?’ ‘Sure I know that rightly,’ said the bird, ‘but if I do my wee bit and everybody else does their wee bit, sure it will be alright.’

My Wig And Me
My Wig and Me was a most moving programme broadcast on BBC NI. It told the story of a number of women and one little girl, bright and beautiful Emily, who had all lost their hair because of alopecia or cancer. Thanks to Theresa Hughes of Tresses Hairpiece Boutique they all found a wig to suit them and give them back self confidence and style.
This letter came to me after the programme.

Theresa is a special lady as I discovered when she provided me with a wig after chemotherapy 16 years ago, “You’ll lose your hair in 19 days and it will be grand because I’m here to make you look lovely.” She added – “You’re a Janet,” and produced the perfect wig, just the attitude you appreciate at a traumatic time. She was much loved as the Wiggy Woman at Belvoir Park Hospital and hundreds of woman, and men, are grateful to her.

A Runaway Success
It’s an important time for Cathy McCourt who flew out to Australia last week to take part in the World Masters Athletics Championships and she has a family tradition to uphold.
The name Jim McCourt is well known in sporting circles; in the 1960s, at the peak of his boxing career, Jim won an Olympic bronze, Commonwealth gold and European medals and now his daughter is set to make more headlines. It runs in the family. Cathy, a NASM Certified Level 4 Advanced Personal Trainer, is currently the 5000m World Masters bronze medallist and European Games bronze medallist and tackles her next challenge in Perth in a few days time,
But the path to success hasn’t been easy.

“My father encouraged me to compete at a competitive level from a young age and I was successful as a junior athlete and competed for Ireland Internationally.” However, a family tragedy meant her running career was cut short at the age of 17 as she explained. “My brother, who was 10 months older than me, was knocked down and killed by a train just a short distance from the family home. It took a long time for the family to recover and I gradually drifted away from the sport and found it very difficult to cope in those following years.”
In her early 30s she met a coach who suggested she should come back to athletics and give it another go. “By this stage I was very unfit, over weight and suffered from severe lack of confidence and very low self-esteem. I never believed I could get back as I thought I was too old but I went along anyway. Since then I haven’t looked back.” Until last September when she broke her foot at the European Games in Nice. “The medics were very doubtful I’d get back to competitive running and told me I probably wouldn’t run again which once again threatened my career. I went to my therapist in Carlow for his opinion and he suggested I didn’t get any metal put into my foot. He worked with me for almost eight months and thankfully I’m back to full training and competition again and looking forward now to competing for Ireland at the World Championships.”
It takes a lot of support to reach this level of competition, training, discipline with diet, expensive travel but thanks to support from Jonathan Millar of Ballynahinch based Bryan Somers Travel she has her return flight tickets in her bag and she’s feeling confident.
Will she be carrying one of her Dad’s medals for good luck? “Too heavy, hopefully I’ll bring some back for him! I’ve a lot to live up to, he won his gold in the Commonwealth games in Jamaica in 1966 and brought the only Olympic medal back to Ireland from Tokyo in 1964. He has always been and will always be my sporting hero.”

Donald Chump Trump. What a specimen, I guess insecure, a man who has to boost his lack of masculinity by taking about his prowess. Sad but worrying. It’s almost funny the number of men who appear to excuse him, calling it locker room banter, implying that all men in men’s company talk this way, putting down women as objects to be used and abused.
I came across it in my workplace 20 years ago and being that much older than some of the other girls, they came to me with their embarrassing tales and I in turn tackled the laddos concerned. Most accepted that their behaviour was short of gentlemanly but they hadn’t realised it was upsetting. However, when I was a teenager, I remember walking through Cornmarket sporting my newly dyed red hair when a workman on some scaffolding round Mooney’s bar on the corner shouted down – “Hey ginger do you snap?” Everyone around laughed, me included! I also remember a senior manager following me upstairs and smacking me on the bottom saying: “Nancy girl (he called me Nancy for some reason) you have a fine pair of child baring hips.” Do you know – I felt complimented! Today in both cases it would be totally unacceptable and these men could be reported for lewd behaviour. But remember, for every one boorishness, rough, bad-mannered Chump there are lots and lots of true caring gentlemen.
