There have been many tears shed, crocodile and actual, over the many deaths of celebrities during the last 12 months. Let’s not get this out of proportion. If you look at the obituaries in our local papers you see the real sadness of loosing someone you love. Many of the tributes come from grannies indicating young people, there are messages from grandchildren to grandparents hinting at the terrible heartbreak and confusion of a death in the family, perhaps for the first time. Some peacefully, others suddenly, those after a long illness. Families are mourning those lost in accidents, a worldwide atrocities as in Istanbul last evening,  and there’s the deep sadness and despair of suicide.

I phoned friends last night to wish them a Happy New Year only to be shocked with the news that a dear brother had died yesterday morning and hearing of another friend who was buried on Wednesday. My grandmother died three days before Christmas many years ago but the date is still a time to pause and think of her and remember the feeling of distress shared by all the family.
Like many others, when I look back on 2016, I remember Bishop Edward Daly who died last August. I met him first Christmas 2014 and wrote about it for the Irish News at that time.

“Taking tea with Bishop Edward Daly in his home on the fringe of Derry city is a delight. A lovely drive from Belfast, a beautiful frosty view from the New Bridge then his terracotta painted house giving out a warm glow on a cold December afternoon.
It’s as warm inside as it promises, and just as I had imagined, the Bishop works surrounded by books; many religious, one shelf devoted to Bibles of all sorts, but also books on theatre, travel, sport – subjects of great variety which reflect his wide interest in life and people.
Betty, the Bishop’s housekeeper, arrives with tea and biscuits. The marmalade cat stalks in, takes one look at me and leaves in a hurry but despite this I still feel most welcome! Of course, we talk of Christmas.
Edward Daly was born and grew up in Belleek Co. Fermanagh during the war years when presents didn’t need batteries and there was a lot of fun with his parents, his brother and three sisters.
“Christmas was simple, holly and turkey and midnight Mass. We didn’t have the box in the corner so we enjoyed each other’s company and the games we played. We’ve lost some of that today which is a pity because this is such a family time.”
Family is important and until her death he spent Christmas Day with his mother. Now he and Betty will enjoy their meal together before he goes about his pastoral business. Looking back he recalls how when in boarding school he experienced the heartbreak of homesickness and, for five of the most formative years of his life, he missed his family dreadfully; so escaping from St. Columb’s College in Derry for a few weeks in December was a highlight during the year. There followed six years studying for the priesthood in the Irish College in Rome where, although Christmas is celebrated, the Italians put more emphasis on Befana, the Feast of Epiphany, celebrated on 6th January. So from the age of 17 to 23 Christmas took a back seat although, when he was appointed to Castlederg in Co. Tyrone, he was back to living out the story he loves so well.
“I do love Christmas, the liturgy, the build up over Advent and particularly Luke’s description of the nativity, he was such a descriptive storyteller, a dramatist.”
He takes down a Bible from the shelf and reads. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. Listen, I bring you good news of great joy, a joy to be shared by the whole people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord. You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger’. Luke tells the story so well.”
Today there is good news in Derry, there’s a relaxed air about this busy city and people are smiling and greeting one another. It wasn’t always like this, as Bishop Daly knows only too well.
“In the years of the Troubles we’d look forward to the cease fire and dread it ending 48 hours later. People lost people during the year so there was always a shadow over Christmas and apprehension over the year to come. Derry is a special place,” he adds, “I have unbounded admiration for the people and the way they have restored Derry and created a whole new life, reinvested in business and re-established the city as the important place it is. The Hospice is a good example of co-operation between all of us as it is totally supported by people who are enormously kind and generous. And children are growing up in a more secure environment, childhood is now enjoyed to the full.”
But he laments bad language on the streets and in the world of entertainment and comes back to the box in the corner and the influence it has on family life although he does applaud good theatre, one of his passions in life. Last week he was delighted with the Liam Lawton in concert in St. Columb’s Hall, he speaks enthusiastically of the New Millennium Theatre and last weeks announcement of £1 million to refurbish the Playhouse, all good news to a man who spent many years producing theatrical shows. Between October and Easter from ’62 and ’70, his memorable variety shows played to an audience of a thousand every Sunday night. Frank Carson was resident host, long before he was famous, working with resident dancers, orchestra and chorus and an impressive cast list, Anne Shelton, Roy Orbinson, Jim Reeves, the Clancys, the Dubliners and many others. His pantomimes were booked out year after year yet Bishop Daly didn’t want a stage for himself, his audience only see and appreciate him within the setting of the church he loves.

His hasn’t been an easy time, as curate in St. Eugene’s Cathedral in the early 60’s he worked in the Bogside where he was distressed by the conditions people were enduring, he took part in the Civil Rights Marches and he was at the heart of the community through those early years of the Troubles, Internment and Operation Motorman, all I’m sure never far from his thoughts but he doesn’t dwell on the past nor does he look too far into the future although he admits the constant reminder of Bloody Sunday and the dramatic pictures of his crouched body waving the handkerchief stained with blood has been distressing to live with. In his book, ‘Mister, are you a Priest?’ he describes in detail his view of that harrowing day, Sunday 30th January 1972 and, during the appalling happenings, seeing a young boy being shot dead, one minute smiling and laughing, the next lying gasping for breath. In his study is a photo of that smiling young man in boxing vest and gloves, Jackie Duddy, full of life and potential.
For all who saw them, these images will never be erased nor the shock of watching such naked hatred and violence contrasted with bravery and disregard for personal safety by many, not least Bishop Edward Daly. On the eve of Bloody Sunday, he had been working on a three-act melodrama with his theatre company the ’71 Players. Rehearsals were well underway and that Sunday evening was the final ‘dress’ and everyone hoped the march would be peacefully over. It wasn’t to be.
“I am abominated by things which have been done,” he says. “Then you meet someone who lifts you up and shows you the better side of humanity. This can have a powerful impact and there is a healing process when you see love and goodness and the positive qualities of courage. This I see in the Hospice every day.”
It was against this background I discovered that Bishop Daly is himself no stranger to illness; in 1977 he had, as he puts it, his first personal confrontation with cancer and in 1993 he had a moderate stroke. In 1999 the cancer returned and a tumour was removed from his lung. It is with this experience that he brings his unique pastoral care to those in the hospice, both patients and staff, and their families.
For him Christmas is a very wonderful time of year, celebrating Mass and preaching on Christmas Eve in Steelstown church beside his home, Mass at the Hospice next morning and part of the day visiting patients and families, often comforting and supporting those who have been bereaved and those who are experiencing the last days of life on this earth. His involvement with the Hospice is very important to him and is reflected in his recent book ‘Do Not Let Your Hearts Be Troubled’, thoughts on ministry to the terminally ill. Then, with a smile, he tells me how he looks forward to New Year’s Day when he will be officiating at the marriage of his niece Rachel Gibson.

Although he has an admiration for playwrights and enjoys writing himself, his ‘Clergy of the Diocese of Derry’ is about to be reprinted, he hasn’t yet penned his own play but he is in the middle of an awesome dramatic piece as he details the Diocesan archives from 1939 to 1990, 67,000 individual documents which he records on one of three computers, the main one, the backup laptop and, taking no chances, another backup machine in St. Columb’s College. Indeed, this man has little time to stop and stare, a man who has his finger on the pulse and a deep love and concern for his fellowman especially at this time of year.
“It’s a time to concentrate on the message which is central to the truth of Christmas and the birth of Christ and the hope He gives to the world, the importance of loving one another, the importance of forgiveness and the importance of living these out in our daily lives. That is my wish for Christmas.”

Listening to the radio and television commentators over the last 24 hours is somewhat depressing, according to these people with their finger on the pulse, no one knows what’s going on, what will happen and what state the world will be in this time next year.  It’s said that in politics we get what we deserve, that’s very unfair.  The problem is what does the lone individual do about it?  Voting systems don’t seem  work, witness the shambles in America, UK and Northern Ireland.  Power corrupts and absolute  power corrupts absolutely.

This time last year I was on top of the world as I was allowed to tell everyone that I had been awarded an MBE.  Then, suddenly, in March, I was standing outside Buckingham Palace with the family waiting to be ushered inside, through the Picture Gallery and into the Ballroom to have Prince William pin the award onto my lovely new jacket.  Surprisingly the whole affair is relaxed and friendly and the palace itself is spectacular and yet warm and cosy in a strange way.  That, however, is down to the people who meet and greet,  shining uniforms and elegant ladies.

It’s a day to savour and remember, to involve family in every minute if you can and then to have some fun.  Enjoy.
