I had lovely company over Christmas and New Year when the Martha’s girls came to visit. I knew them well from their stories as told by Alrene Hughes in her first two books about the Goulding family, the story of a Belfast woman and her struggle to support her four daughters during the Second World War. It was very splendid sitting under the chandeliers in the Great Hall at Stormont, before the deluge, and listening to the Donaghadee Male Voice Choir, beautiful harpist Ruth Corry who brought tears to the eye playing ‘Silent Night’ and the genius that is 14 year old Rowel Elesio Friers. Not often a teenager gets a standing ovation at Stormont! What a talent which I’m glad to say has been recognised by professionals like Barry Douglas, he won the national piano competition two years running and is now a scholarship student at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin.
This is a most assured young man, handsome in his grey tails, introducing his pieces with humour, from List to and sporting a white bandage on his left thumb. Apparently someone brandished a pair of scissors at school that afternoon and Rowel’s thumb got in the way. Even in pain and in bandages the young virtuoso didn’t put a finger or a thumb wrong although I hear the blood was flying out of the cut when he got home. Still bandaged, at the end of last month he passed his audition into the Dublin International Piano Competition playing in front of an international jury. That’s professionalism. In 2017 and beyond, remember the name, Rowel Elesio Friers.
