Many of our thoughts are with Davy Hamilton and his family after the devastating loss of his dear wife Marian. Davy is well known to me though working with the Ulster Actors in the Arts Theatre also our production Tonight At Eight in Culloden Hotel many years ago. Marian was always part of the music and theatre scene and she will be sorely missed by her many friends.
Sold Out Sadly
The Commitments at the Opera House is a class act. It really is like watching a young man putting together his dream soul band, auditioning and rehearsing and then playing to the crowd.
We loved them and their music and it’s a real sadness that it didn’t work out for them – a sadness also that the theatre is sold out for the rest of the run. Come back again Mustang Sally, River Deep Mountain High, Papa Was A Rolling Stone and the rest – great music well played.

Gone But Not Forgotten
What a couple of weeks – Stormont, Westminster and Capital Hill. Those women surrounding Trump – beautiful clothes hangers and some of the American female commentators are amazing – excellent way to learn what plastic surgery does to a person’s face and it’s not pleasant. The Waterfront Hall was a place of great excitement on Saturday night – Robbie Burns was due on stage to renew his association with Belfast. He told us that the Irish News was one of the first newspapers to print his poems and he gave us a few renditions including the famous Address to the Haggis.
Very handsome in the shape of Christopher Tait, who the programme told us, is Scotland’s finest Burs re-enactor and it was fascinating to listen to him speak Burns words. It was a fine concert, Alan McBride and Sylvia Burnside sang Fare Thee Well Love with the Ulster Orchestra who, with the Ulster Scots Agency, were our hosts. They’d assembled a great set of guests for the party, Emily Smith sang beautiful traditional Scottish songs and her husband Jamie McClennan accompanied her on the guitar but then he stepped out of the duo and was mesmerising playing the ‘fiddle’ as he put it, no airs and graces here! Not only is he wonderful to listen to but also to watch, the violin becomes an extension of his body. One of the highlights was the appearance of the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band and the Ulster-Scots Agency Juvenile Pipe Band, the young ones, around 50 of them, and the future of our thriving pipe band community. They were so sweet, like little cherubs with their cheeks puffed up as they played, and the drummers twirling their drum sticks in unison. We also had the dainty young ladies of Markethill Ulster-Scots dancers, altogether a spectacle to behold.
At the end of the evening the Ulster Orchestra treated us to a lengthy selection of jigs and reels and toes were tapping, reminded me of the days when I sat with my Granny listening to David Curry and the BBC Light Orchestra on a Saturday evening long before television took over teatimes.

Last week I was delighted to meet two visitors to Belfast as they waited for a tour of the City Hall. Ben and Andrea Doyle come from Coeur d’Alene in Idaho America. a beautiful tourist city known as a little slice of heaven so we’d a lot to live up to. They flew to Boston, Amsterdam, Dublin, Limerick and so to Belfast intent on seeing the Giant’s Causeway. Time didn’t permit that visit because they loved Belfast and spent their holiday visiting all the highlights we have to offer and, most important of all, sitting in the Grand Opera House watching the pantomime. Cinderella just blew them away, they loved it and especially May McFettridge so much so they are coming back later this year for the next pantomime – and the Giant’s Causeway – and this time they will be bringing their three children with them. “We will tell everyone back home how wonderful Belfast and the people here are and recommending they come and see for themselves.”
