Easter is such a special time if you are interested in the story of the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.  The controversy rumbles on about chocolate eggs verses chocolate Easter eggs, commercialism is rampant unfortunately.  On Good Friday afternoon I joined the congregation in St. Anne’s Cathedral during the Seven Last Words of Christ from the Cross led by The Rt. Rev. Trevor Williams who said something that struck home – The love of power has taken over from the power of love.

I went back to the Cathedral last night for the Easter Vigil where the Paschal Candle was processed up the aisle and we all lit our individual candles from it as it passed.  We were told that the Easter Vigil begins with the lighting of a new fire which for us was lit in the porch of the Cathedral.  All the lights were turned off and the building was quite dark and atmospheric.  “Kindling of a new fire is an archetypal symbol of renewal and new birth,” we were told, “and we in Ireland remember with pride the courage and faith of Patrick whose new Easter fire at Slane challenged the paganism of the High King of Tara.”  You learn something every day.

Soon the gloom was dispelled with the light of our candles as the service continued.  The choir was superb with a dozen young women leading the praise, quite a change from the choir boys that used to be.  Below is a St. Anne’s picture of some of the choristers.

Well praise the Lord, April has had her baby and we can all get on with life.  Over the last five weeks apparently 80 million people tuned into the live cam at the Animal Adventure Park in New York to watch the pregnancy progress.  Then yesterday afternoon the word went out, mobile phones sprung to life with just one word – APRIL!!!  It didn’t take very long for the birth and it was really amazing, the little creature seemed to be folded up inside and came out front hooves first alongside the little black nose and gradually front legs, head and long neck appeared and with one almighty push, like coming through a letterbox, the little boy landed in a heap on the sawdust.

Then began the tender licking and nudging and within 45 minutes the baby giraffe was on wobbly feet as it’s mother guided him towards his first drink of warm nourishing milk.  All this time Oliver paced in the compound next door leaning over and encouraging his wife with a bit of necking, and boy can giraffes neck.

The staff were superb both in their care of the pregnant animal and in keeping the public informed.  We had live updates non-stop and we could watch the keepers going in to stroke the baby-bump even giving it a kiss and I’m sure there were words of loving encouragement.  I hope that the family of three can now escape the compound into the fresh air of their paddock.

It’s always a pleasure to visit Christine Lynch. When I first called with her in 2010 it was to talk about her husband Dr. Gerard Lynch but what a surprise I got as our chat widened. Not only did she disclose that her mother was the pretty little girl in the iconic photo of Cottingley Fairy fame but she handed me the original lantern slides and the camera given to Frances Griffith by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 100 year ago.
When she was just nine, Christine’s mother and her older cousin Elsie, captured the delicate figures that fooled the world. Even Conan Doyle’s friend, the escapologist Harry Houdini, went to his grave wondering. This was one fraud he was unable to expose. Or was it a fraud?  There’s room for doubt, certainly in one of the five photographs taken.
Before she died in 1986, Frances left a first hand account of the mischievous con as well as details of the fifth photograph she was convinced showed a real fairy.
It was taken at a distance of only three feet. The fairy can be seen looking directly at the girl although Frances only saw what looked like a cocoon in the middle of a clump of grass. When the negative was developed, misty images on the plate were strengthened and to the astonishment of everyone, transparent images of five fairies were discovered, their wings silhouetted against the skyline. There appeared to be many more fairies deeper into the grasses and harebells. The story came to a wider audience 2009 when the Antiques Roadshow visited Belfast.  Christine brought Conan Doyle’s camera and the glass slides showing the fairies and expert Peter Atterbury was thrilled.
My visit last week followed an invitation from Christine to meet the author of the latest book based on her mother’s story, ‘The Cottingley Secret’. Turned out writer Hazel Gaynor also has a fascinating story .

Born in East Yorkshire she saw the fairy pictures when she was nine years old, as she says, at an age when every little girl hoped they had fairies at the bottom of their garden. Although the images stayed with her it wasn’t until she attended a writers workshop in Kildare that they came flooding back. “When I walked into the room each place at the table had an A4 page and a photo of Francis and the fairies. The tutor asked if anyone knew the picture and I said yes, it was part of my growing up. In this case she wanted us to use the picture as a writing prompt, how would we construct a story around the image?” For Hazel it was easy but more importantly it stirred memories and advanced a plan. “I suddenly wanted to know more about Frances, the girl was intriguing, how did she manage it, what was the story.” Between writing best selling novels she researched the Cottingley Fairies and discovered Frances and Elsie lived in her native Yorkshire.
Business woman Hazel took up writing when she was made redundant in 2009, working from home when her sons, 9 and 11, were at school. At first she submitted her books only to have reject letter after reject letter. But this is woman does not give up easily. “I’d a call from an agent who had read my book ‘The Girl Who Came Home’ about a Irish family on the Titanic and she wanted to talk to me. Within six weeks she’d sold my work to Harper Collins and now this new book will be on the shelves this autumn – the whole venture is sprinkled with fairy dust!”
It goes back to the day when, out of the blue, she got an e-mail from her agent. “‘Just a line – would you think of writing about the Cottingley Fairies?’ We hadn’t talked about it, she didn’t know my interest, she didn’t know of the folders and files I had stacked up full of information!”
So in 2015 Hazel began writing her Cottingley book, sitting in the attic of her home in Kildare, looking into the tree tops, hearing the birds, being warmed by the sun and soothed by the rain.
During this time she bought the book ‘Reflections on the Cottingley Fairies’, featuring Frances diary entries of the time.  In 1917 Frances wrote that she was quite used to seeing fairies in the woodland by the stream in the village of Cottingley, but when the story had to be proved to the family, she and Elsie devised a plan and by using cut-outs from a children’s book and attaching them to hat pins the ‘fairies’ appeared to float in the air. Pictures were taken with her uncle’s camera and later with a camera given to them by Conal Doyle in 1920. The initial photos went round the world and back, they were accepted as being authentic, only the cousins knew the truth which they eventually admitted. But those taken by Doyle’s camera showed one Frances maintained it was not a setup. It was taken at a distance of only three feet and the fairy can be seen looking directly at the girl. When the negative was printed the misty images on the plate were strengthened and to the astonishment of everyone, five transparent images of fairies were discovered their wings silhouetted against the sky with many more shapes deeper into the grasses and harebells.
Christine Lynch compiled the contents of her mother’s diary and Hazel was excited to read the first hand account and e-mailed Christine only to discover she was actually in touch with Frances mother.
Christine read Hazel’s novels. “I knew she was the right person to write a book based on my mother’s story. There was a film in 1997 but I didn’t like it, perhaps once this book is published there’ll be another one!”
So, on the 100th anniversary, one mystery remains. The question is, does the fifth photograph taken by Frances Griffith show real fairies?
