There’s Always Next Year

Dashed into Belfast yesterday to watch the Gay Pride celebration.  Parked fairly easily in Linenhall Street, with Alan walked through the City Hall, through the young people enjoying picnics on the grass and got a nice seat outside looking up Royal Avenue, even time to buy a rainbow flag like everyone else.

Town was like a rainbow, everyone was happy in the sunshine, people from all over the world, four medical students from Oman asking me what it was all about, was able to tell them and they too were excited to watch the carnival.  People came in all shapes and sizes, some where dressed exquisitely for the occasion others not so and I didn’t see one man or woman, boy or girl the worse for alcohol.

A hen party was in fine form on the Belfast Party Bike – And so we waited.  Got chatting to an elderly man from Dumfries who come over on the boat with his wife just for the day.  He often does this and if he could afford it he said he would like to live here.  Then he startled me!  “What are you doing in Belfast today?”  “Waiting for the parade, been waiting for an hour and a half, it should be arriving soon.”  Then the bombshell. “It’s been and gone.”  Well blow me down.  It must have moved at break neck speed from Customs House Square – just proves the point about the early bird.  Talk about disappointment although sitting in the sun watching the world and his wife go by was very pleasant.

The other disappointment was Usain Bolt missing out on the gold medal last night.

Dance Dance Wherever You May Be

I wrote about acting last week, it’s dancing this week and what better  pastimes for young people? Dancing especially, all the attributes of theatre and superb exercise as well, that’s what the pupils say after a strenuous workout at Ajendance Studios on Belfast’s Beersbridge Road. The world is their oyster, hip hop, jazz, ballet, street dance, tap and aerobic arts, can you believe the youngest student is only 18 months old, getting in tune with the rhythm of life from an early age.
I first came across this company at the opening of the visitor exhibition in the City Hall where they danced us through the ages and the history of the city, Then again more recently outside the Titanic building during the Maritine Festival.

I was accompanying guests from Edinburgh and it’s fair to say they were blown away by the Titanic experience especially when we stepped out into the warm sunshine, there was music in the air and two dozen boys and girls were putting on a dance display for the Saturday morning crowds.
In charge of  Ajendance  are Annika Graham and Clare Montgomery, friends who met when they were in amateur drama productions at the Grand Opera House. “We were dancers who put our heads together and though let’s open a school and share the joy.”
From small beginnings six years ago, the girls now have classes seven days a week with 170 on their books including a lot of young men who love hip hop and break dancing. “We are cross community and students come from all over not only to enjoy the classes but to gain qualifications, we’ve some who have gone on to dance and drama schools in England, to tour with professional companies and entertain on cruise liners.”
Much of their work is for charity, they danced at the Childrens Hospice and flash danced in Belfast to raise money; they enter, and win, competitions, appear in corporate promotions, even arrange themed hen parties!

Let’s talk about gender stereotyping and iffy ads on television. Although modern men have learned how to iron and cook and make beds – clothes are now crease resistant, cooking a ‘ding’ dinner isn’t difficult and making a bed is just shaking the duvet, there are still households where the woman is put upon and gets no help from her husband, she might well be out working all day and then comes home to do the chores. That’s the way my generation was brought up, I well remember my mother saying “it’s all very well to have a wee job but be sure to have his tea on the table when he comes home.” It was hard for her generation to come to terms with women working when the man was already on a reasonable wage, they didn’t realise about the creeping cost of living, mortgages and rising food bills. I honestly think that today very few women are annoyed by the adverts showing a female doing the dishes or stuffing a washing machine while men are shown climbing mountains to get their special brand of beer. It’s designed to sell a product.
In general it’s a more equal society when it comes to shared labour. Have you noticed the number of men pushing a trolly round a supermarket these days? Often with young children in tow. It’s sharing responsibility so a living wage is coming into the house. It’s a fact of life that women do take more responsibility when it comes to running the home and the family because she is better at it than a man. You know the old story, woman tired, asks man to make the tea, man says OK but will you do the vegetables because you do it better than me and you end up doing the lot because it’s easier and faster. Fair enough if the man then clears up after you and does the dishes and puts them away – that’s fair labour relations.
The joy of most of todays young men and women is that they can turn their hand to anything although as we’ve seen, when it comes to equal pay for equal work it all falls down, however, women now have a impetus to challenge that and they are doing so – the sisterhood is on the rise and don’t need the Advertising Standards Authority’s crackdown on ads that offend them, we can think for for ourselves thank you very much.

The one area of advertising that I do take exception to is the glamorous world of perfumes. Some of these short stories are verging on the pornographic, usually fantasy bedroom scenes where presumably the woman drives the man to distraction with her scent until he pounces but she evades his advances and wanders off half clad in the flimsiest of apparel. Of course they are always stick thin, beautiful, with luxurious hair beautifully coiffured; J’Adore by Dior is even set in the Versailles Hall of Mirrors and sees screen goddess Charlize Theron (above) strutting her stuff.  Coming up to Christmas our screens will be thick with these ads – it’s difficult buying a perfume that suits you anyway but you’d be mad to be taken in with the storyline and forget to smell the product before investing and as for men buying scent for their lady, unless they ask first – disaster!
These adverts just emphasis the fact that the vast majority of us will never achieve such a vision of loveliness and a degree of dissatisfaction sets in that no perfume will dispel.
