Two Angry Men

Really enjoyed the short film Two Angry Men at the Strand Arts Centre Holywood Road last Sunday afternoon.   The story of a famous time in Ulster theatre history when playwright Sam Thomspon and actor James Ellis fought the city council when they banned their production  because it was too controversial.  Adrian Dunbar and Conleth Hill head the cast of this story set in the shipyards and telling of  the 1959 scandal that saw Jimmy Ellis take on the Group Theatre board of directors over the production of Over The Bridge, a story of shipyard bigotry and violence, rough and real.

At the press conference to introduce Ellis as the newly appointed artistic director of the Group, playwright Sam Thompson spoke of his forthcoming play in some detail unfortunately alerting the chairman of the theatre to the controversial nature of the work. So the cat and mouse game began.
McKee wanted to read the script, strangely there were no extra copies available. It mattered not. McKee, one of Ulster’s elite, suspected Thompson’s lay of being ‘subversive’; a script went missing and on the afternoon of the first rehearsal McKee summoned Ellis and actor’s union rep Maurice O’Callaghan to a meeting.
The outcome was predictable. The chairman of the board wanted sections of the play removed, even one major character was under threat, he criticised the language and claimed the play ‘could lead to civil unrest and even rioting,’ stating: “It is the policy of the directors of the Ulster Group Theatre to keep political and religious controversies off our stage.” His board fell in behind him and the production was cancelled.

The drama behind the scenes is documented in Jimmy’s book Troubles Over The Bridge and now his son Tito’s film, documenting the blatant censorship that was appalling yet you’ve only to think back to Newtownabbey Borough Council’s failed attempt to ban The Reduced Shakespeare Company.
A tale of two cultures, the raw passion of the shipyard and the well known actors who believed the play deserved to be produced and the city fathers who just couldn’t understand that characters like Warren Baxter and Davy Mitchell existed let alone what they stood for.
What happened after that board meeting? With the courage of his convictions, Ellis resigned from the Group and started his own company and went from personal success to success. And the play? It too was a huge success and to this day is still being performed.  Not only did they get angry, the also got even!

The good news is that this 17 minute film is only the beginning.  Once the money is gathered, a full length film is planned and that will be a night of nights.  On Sunday Jimmy’s wife and son were our hosts and members of Sam Thompson and many of his neighbours were in the audience.

It was a full house  at the MAC theatre in Belfast. Pinocchio was the attraction and excitement was building. But this was an afternoon with a difference because this was a special performance. The children’s theatre company, Cahoots NI, were giving one of their ‘relaxed’ performances especially designed to entertain those with sensory communications disorders, a learning disability, with Down’s or Autism spectrum. Before the show begins, the cast introduce themselves to the audience, some put on their costumes to show they are actors playing a part not a scary character or creature. Sean Cairns, who plays the baddy, introduces the members of the band who each play their instrument and then romp into the loudest number from the show so when it comes to showtime no one will be surprised or frightened. House lights are at 50% of their normal brightness and sound is also controlled so everyone feels they are in a safe environment and can enjoy the theatre experience. At these shows, some young people like to get up and walk around and that’s ok too.
As well as these relaxed performances, specially trained MAC staff travel to special schools across Northern Ireland with ‘Theatre in the Box’, a model showing the layout of the theatre, eliminating the scary elements, for instance the dark tunnel that leads to the auditorium, all to help children understand what to expect when they visit the MAC for the first time.
These shows are only bookable by phone so the format can be explained before bookings are made.
There are relaxed performance, signed and with audio description this afternoon at   2 pm. and another at 6 p.m. on 18th December.

Belfast artist Daniel Dowling never fails to surprise and entertain with his paintings and his current exhibition at Cultúrlann, Falls Road is no exception.   Firstly it’s a visual diary of his 1000 kilometre walk across the Spanish Meseta, secondly it was a journey through his life, coming to terms with the past and, he says, finding his identity at 62 years of age.  It’s an intriguing story that links the 14 art works depicting the landscapes and his discovery of links between the Celtic and Spanish culture.
“Back in the mists of time, the Milesians, a people from northern Spain invaded and occupied Ireland bringing with them their Celtic culture and language.”  And so began a mystic and fascinating story in watercolour, oil and pencil on paper.  Almost out of place is the large scale work showing shoppers walking along Donegall Square West, their  bags overflowing, stern looks on their faces.  “That’s the baggage we all carry.”
On his journey he took the path of the ancient Celts following the ley lines to Finisterre, Spanish for the end of the world.
“They made these journeys to examine and explore their concept of reality.  They walked to the very edge of what they thought was a flat earth and peered over the edge into the abyss.  Like them as I walked I was able to look back on my life and examine the baggage.”
One painting depicts a ventriloquist doll’s head, one quarter of the scull is open showing little people slaving away inside.  “My parents wallpapering my brain and so my outlook on life,” he explained.  “I now know I can wallpaper my own life thanks to that walk and the chance to steep myself in the history and culture of the country and the opportunity to put my experience on canvass.”

Alzheimer’s Disease is a major talking point today yet a couple of generations ago before families became scattered, it was accepted that granny often sat in the corner of a cozy room and it was considered in her dotage. Grandpa would wander a bit but everyone knew him and neighbours brought the old man home.
Today it’s very different, this terminal illness is a major issue and can effect people of any age and background. The positive message however, is that people can live with Alzheimer’s, there are ways of managing the condition and there’s help available so carers no longer need to feel isolated.
Hardly a day goes by without something appearing in the newspapers or being discussed on radio or television about Alzheimer’s disease which comes under the umbrella of dementia. The standard 10 minute to appointment is said to be too brief for complex conditions such as dementia to be discussed, tests made and physical examinations undertaken. The Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine believes an urgent overhaul of the assessment process is required and the Alzheimer’s Society say a third of people with dementia are left in the dark without diagnosis.
But the message is getting out to the public especially with the episode of Emmerdale which is from the perspective of a character suffering from a stroke related early onset vascular dementia. Clever production puts viewers inside the head of the former vicar Ashley Thomas.
It’s said that there are two type of people in the world, those who know someone with dementia or those who have dementia, it’s a growing situation.
Looking back, a lot has happened since 1986 when the Alzheimer’s Disease Society open a branch in Northern Ireland and this year, 30 years on, the Society is gathering material for their archive which charts the course of both this mental illness and the support the Society offers.
Michael McMillan has researched those years and written a remarkably detailed account of the proposals put forward by Dr. Noeleen Devaney, psychogeriatrician at Holywell Hospital and how, from small beginning, funding was obtained through coffee mornings, selling book marks and pens and later discos and street collections were organised and eventually public meetings held. She was very aware that dementia in general and Alzheimer’s in particular were not well know, and as a consequence the care offered to people living with the disease was often basic.
Although care was good it was not tailored to the person with Alzheimer’s and carers knowledge was limited as was any support, quite the opposite today.
Although the Society has grown in strength and vision, one thing hasn’t changed, the concern over this distressing condition, the thought of it engenders fear in both sufferer and carer.
Mary from Moira told me that in her husband’s case she looks on it as not being his fault. “I just cope,” she told me, “most of the time it’s all right but sometimes he thinks I’m an intruder and he feels threatened and would push me away; he’s still strong but I manage to talk him down from his fears, after all the condition has damaged his brain, he’s not to blame.”
When Jim Watson’s condition was diagnosed in 2014, his family were taken by surprise although as his wife says, there were signs that they put down to stress and anxiety over a situation at work. It was this time of year so it was a difficult Christmas. Since then it has been a story of increasing incidents as Emily explained. “On one occasion he came in, threw the keys down and announced ‘they’ve stolen the car.’ He’d parked it and forgotten where. We went to Majorca for a holiday and he went out for a walk and was away three and a half hours, the police brought him back to the hotel. The Alzheimer’s Association has been a life saver, their support has made all the difference to both our lives. The ‘Singing for the Brain’ for instance when we sing for an hour and the results are amazing and spirits are lifted. ‘The Memory Walk’ is for the extended family and we do a couple of laps round Stormont grounds all laughing and talking.”
The Society also run Memory Cafes where carers and those with Alzheimer’s sit together over crafts, drama, baking breading and talking. Sharing is an important part of the Society’s ethos and according to Emily, it works. The Befrienders group for those experiencing this disease allowed the carer a morning off and some valuable time to themselves.
