Day late as I was in Ardara Donegal at a brilliant craft fair on Saturday afternoon and evening.
The Kilclooney Country Market crafters are something else, such a display of gifts and food – everything from potato bread to slate coasters, fluffy white knitted coats to photographs and diamond paintings – something else. Jewellery and Christmas cakes. It was a great day and a comfy stay overnight in Nesbitt Arms Hotel.
What a week it’s been. Our dear friend Sheila Dundee, make up artist in Ulster Television for many years, died on Wednesday and will be buried later today. How we’ll all miss her, what a character, BOAC personality girl meeting and greeting the rich and the famous at Heathrow, later coming to Ulster Television to powder and paint the great and the good, soothing frayed nerves and making a silk purse out of many a pig’s ear. She asked me to speak at her funeral, I asked her what should I say? Just say I was a nice person and I enjoyed life. The greatest understatement of the year. She will be missed and she certainly won’t be forgotten.
Yesterday we heard of the death of Austin Hunter, a superb journalist and a really decent and nice man. He had an infectious smile, you just had to smile back and you listened when he spoke and payed attention when he wrote. What a sad way for a highly respected colleague to loose his life in a car accident in
Henry McDonald summed it up: Devastating news to hear of my colleague&friend Austin Hunter being killed in Bahrain. He was a superb broadcaster, an honest reporter, a deft public relations expert and most importantly of all a thoroughly nice, decent man. We are losing too many good people. RIP.
And many people were saddened by Joan Semple’s message on Facebook:
As President of Belfast Naturalists’ Field Club it is my sad duty to inform you of the sudden death of Norma Price. Although Norma had only been a member of the club for two and a half years she made a huge contribution during that time. In April she was elected to committee and despite her illness she fully participated in the affairs of the club. It is due to her that we have this Facebook group which she set up and managed as well as training committee members in the use of Facebook. At our last committee meeting in November she presented samples of publicity material which she had produced. Norma’s enthusiasm and determination will be greatly missed. On behalf of the club I wish to pass on condolence to her family who are in our thoughts at this time of shock and sorrow.
And comedian Majorie Rae died; we were robbed of a very funny lady from a popular family where her father and her brother Tom Raymond were also on the stage. We are loosing so many lovely people. This has been a terrible year for bad news.

Eventually she took over the running from Aly McElroy Jones and has built the business ever since. “But I’m not a businesswoman,” she assured me, “I’m an artist with a huge desire to bring local craft to the public so we opened in Castle Lane in 2014 and this month moved to our premises in Ann Street and it’s working well.” Being at the back door of Victoria Square means a lot of passing trade and the bright shop stops them in their tracks and, with the Christmas market in mind, Linzi has established a ‘pop-up’ Studio Souk in Castle Court and also runs Jack’s Coffee Bar in the new CS Lewis Square in East Belfast.
Artists and craft workers become members of Studio Souk; upstairs in Ann Street there are ten studios for them to create and the first two floors are filled with their work of the 95 members. This enthusiastic entrepreneur now employs ten staff and aims to open more Studio Souks with workshops, kilns for potters and machinery for metal workers. When I was in Ann Street, the award winning artist Deepa Mann-Kler came into the shop. Deepa has exhibited her neon and creative light installations all round the world, paintings, drawings and photography have gone on show in China, America, Germany and throughout the UK and Ireland so she knows the market. I asked her how she valued such an outlet. “It’s wonderful,” she told me, “such an invaluable platform for local artists. Just look around at the variety, there’s a lot of talent represented in this place.”
Linzi agrees. This mother of Macie who’s five and Adeline just four months, has found that customers are amazed at what’s on offer. “People don’t realise. Maybe with the focus on CS Lewis and the Connswater Comber Greenways just now will help people realise the wealth of local talent. When they come in and see the variety it takes their breath away.
