I wonder if the Queen enjoyed her birthday pop concert last night – I doubt it! There was very little to appeal to a lady of 92. My bet is she was glad to get home and snuggle into bed with a hot chocolate and the Duke of Edinburgh. The best for me was the young black singer who sang Happy. Such a lovely happy face. And as for Alfie Bowe, I just don’t think he’s swing material, far too operatic but the BBC big band were terrific. And did she really enjoy Craig David? I doubt it. I certainly didn’t. In fact I thought for a special party concert for Her Maj it was a pretty awful show but she would have been too polite to leave before the end! Instead she was very gracious.
Wasn’t she very cute walking round her garden with Sir David Attenburgh, they were so shy and romantic, in fact he seemed to be dumb struck with emotion. Two 90 plus year olds the only thing missing was them holding hands and I just wish I’d been able to watch they once the camera stopped turning!

She doesn’t take no for an answer and she’s always right.

At one point the women are on their own, Beverly having sent the men to check on the party; they begin to discuss their husbands and their short comings. Beverly asks ‘Ange’ as she calls her whether ‘Tone’ is ever violent. ‘No, he’s not violent. Just a bit nasty. Like, the other day, he said to me he’d like to sellotape my mouth and that’s not very nice, is it?’ Beverly isn’t so sure, the ex-footballer appeals to her and she cosies up to him much to the annoyance of her husband.
There are plenty of laughs, the ‘only way is Essex’ accents never let up and the stage is a swirling set of emotions that keep the audience riveted. Although it’s very funny there’s the feeling of unease, what’s this all leading up to? That question is answered in a dramatic way when suddenly the power base shifts from one character to another and the facade falls away.
