And then we come to Phil Davison. I met him In Una Rodden’s couturiers where he was holding an exhibition. Phil liked craft at school, watched his mother sewing and knitting, but then on a visit to Arkansas in 2008, a friend’s grandmother taught him cross stitch and so changed his life. He’d planned to be a geneticist, instead he studied fashion and textiles, worked in London for Vivienne Westwood, for Saville Row high fashion houses and became Bellville Sassoon’s studio head where he cut couture patterns for dresses for the royal family.
But cross stitch is his passion and as founder of Urban Cross Stitch, he designs ‘provocative’ patterns and sells kits to crafters around the world. He holds regular stitching evenings which are attended by hundreds, Cupcake and Cocktail events, craft and craic. The first cross-stitch event was held at a bar near the market. “The idea started as a bit of a joke. We offered free cupcakes and the bar supplied cocktails and people could come along and cross-stitch for free. We thought if we got 20 we’d be doing well but 250 turned up for that first event. “I cried the night John Peel played Teenage Kicks,” Terri recalls. “He announced – ‘Isn’t that the most wonderful record you’ve ever heard in the world?’ he said. ‘In fact, I’m going to play it again.’ That was a highlight.”
A low point came on Saturday 17th April 2006. “I was compere at a gig in the Maritime when the news came through that North Street Arcade was burning down, as traders we’d been against developers knocking down the building next to the Arcade for a multi-storey car park. The police said it was arson but the NI Office said it wasn’t. There’ve been no arrests and we haven’t got a penny. I lost everything, artwork, records, the label, the history, my life story.”
