PARTNERS IN CRIME

Tommy and Tuppence
Tommy and Tuppence

Along with six and a half million others, I came across Partners in Crime last Sunday by accident.  BBC One at 9 p.m. What a bore.  It may be Agatha Christie but these amateur sleuths, Tommy and Tuppence, are like limp lettuce leaves, I couldn’t bond with either of them and it amazes me that this husband and wife team even bond with each other!  I couldn’t give 2d for them and how they are going to save the Empire. Now, on the other hand,  I purposely tuned into Life in Squares on BBC Two on Monday night.

Life in Squares
Life in Squares

This is the story of the famous Bloomsbury Set and it centres on the life  of  tragic writer Virginia Woolf, her artist sister Vanessa and their friends,  famous names of the time, EM Forster, Lytton Strachey, Maynard Keyes and the rest.  It’s just before the outbreak of World War One and seemingly for the elite of the time it was a case of ‘anything goes’.  At least they had style unlike many of the Lords of today!  According to Dorothy Parker these friends ‘lived in squares, painted in circles and loved in triangles’, and  the triangles are very graphic with a lot of male bonding going on.  At least it’s tastefully done unlike the gross and ugly story line of EastEnder’s Ben and his lover in the funeral parlour – unacceptable at 7.30 p.m. to my mind.

Life in Squares was a bit hard to follow but all will become clear – I think;  this was a group of eccentric people who lived life to the full as they saw it but it seems to me the core of their story was rather rotten.  We’ll see.

KING OF THE JUNGLE and he who took him down

Cecil the Hunted

….. and the villain of the piece

Walter James Palmer of Minnesota
Walter James Palmer of Minnesota

What about this dentist then? A really awful story from every point of view. Despicable that anyone should take pleasure in killing animals, stalking and shooting beautiful beasts of the jungle, now so comparatively tame and so apparently controlled that they are literally  ‘easy meat’.
However, the dentist from Minnesota claims  he thought that his actions were totally legal, he had all the permits and permissions required, or so he said. He has a track record of being a big game hunter, (and he pleaded guilty to killing a black bear outside a restricted zone in Wisconsin and then lying about it), his trophy cabinet is full to over flowing, his walls hung with heads.

Apparently his guides lure Cecil the Lion out of his comfort zone into a place where Walter James Palmer could get a good shot with his arrows.  It cost him £32.000 to wound the animal with a crossbow, track him for 40 hours and then shoot him with a rifle. The poor creature was then beheaded and skinned.

A Happy Altermative

Hard to explain such behaviour, sadistic to my mind. As has been said, you can achieve wonderful results shooting animals with a long range lens.
Now, as I write Mr. Palmer is the quarry being hounded by a viscous pack of women baying for blood. Justifiable retribution. Face Book is throwing up more names and pictures of these blood lusting hunters, I wouldn’t like to be in their shoes.  A cull is one thing, random killing for sport quite another.

They are all losers except for one aspect of this terrible crime, we are now more aware of endangered species and of the fine work being done by conservationists, who aren’t just longhaired Moses sandalled do-gooders, they are brave people trying to preserve magnificent creatures and the money is rolling in to help them achieve their goal on our behalf and more importantly, on our children and grandchildren’s behalf.

David Attenborough must be so upset, thank goodness for his tracking and shooting of nature at it’s most outstanding.  One thought bothers me though – not much is being made of the love of hunting by the royal family – didn’t Prince Harry do a bit of ‘big game’ hunting not so long ago!  It might be a big game to all these wealthy bored people but hopefully this publicity will put regulations in place to curb their enthusiasm.

We used to drink apple cider vinegar to loose weight – Ugg! However it’s good first thing in the morning as a wake up call, contains vitamins C, A and iron apparently so beneficial all round. A teaspoonful in a glass of warm water is recommended. We also used it in a foot bath after dancing the night away in stilettos, very soothing for sore feet and unhappy toe nails!

But there are many more benefits as I read recently. Cleaning your makeup brushes for example, also it helps with dandruff, just soak your head with one part vinegar and two parts water, apply it between washes leaving it on for about 10 minutes. Not to be used , however, if your scalp is cracked or bleeding.

The same routine will help acne apparently, one part vinegar to four parts water, dab on with clean cotton wool and leave for ten minutes. Rinse off, repeat threes times a day until you see results.
As young women around town, we used to use lemon juice to rinse our hair, a great thing to make it really clean and shiny and using cider vinegar does the same thing but is also supposed to help with hair growth. In this case, one third of a cup of vinegar to four cups of water and massage it into your hair after shampooing, make a turban out of a towel and leave it for ten minutes to absorb then rinse out with cold water.  I would add, we used beer as a setting agent and big rollers to achieve a fashionable beehive!  You’re probably too young to remember!

Sparkling Nassers

You can also use apple cider vinegar to keep your teeth looking fresh and white as it kills bad bacteria found in your mouth and gums. For an extra deep clean, mix half a tablespoon of ACV with one tablespoon of baking soda to create a paste to brush away any unwanted surface stains.

On A Kneed To Know Basis
I got this interesting question sent to me at the Irish News last week.
Anne. What is a knee jerk reaction? BT 6

When the doctor hits your knee with a hammer, your lower leg makes an involuntary jerk – a knee jerk. Because he has hit the patellar tendon, a message is sent to the central nervous system and a contraction of the tendon causes the involuntary response, just like people do when they make a spontaneous impassioned reaction to an emotional situation without stopping to think it out. Don’t think you can do much about controlling either case!

Book In With Barney

Paula
Paula McFetridge and Stephen Beggs prepare to take Belfast on tour.

What have Barney the Bap, milk of magnesia and hot chocolate all got in common? Kabosh Theatre Company.
Like the troubadours of old, Kabosh have taken to the streets to bring their entertainment to the public and certainly under the guidance of artistic director Paula McFetridge, the idea has been a marvellous success.
At a time when theatre is drowning in the swirling funding cuts, companies have to ‘think outside the box’ if they are going to survive and certainly telling the story of Belfast whilst sampling all that is best in food and drink has proved a winner for this vibrant group of actors.

The Sea Front at Portstewart
The Sea Front at Portstewart

When I was a little girl we holidayed in Portstewart, the ladies and gentlemen strolling through the town, shops and boarding houses on one side of the road the the sea on the other. Those were the days of swimming in the outdoor pool, making sand castles and sitting on the shallow steps on the promenade to sing songs and listen to Bible stories with the CSSM – the Children’s Special Service Mission – and as I remember this was good fun and something to look forward to. But then there was something else much more memorable – the Colchester Repertory Company presenting plays in the Town Hall. This was my first introduction to theatre. Three times a week a new play to amaze a young girl and I haven’t got over it since.
Theatre was the thing in those days, play houses were packed.

Donny Osmond as Joseph in the London Production
Donny Osmond as Joseph in the London Production

Then it fell away in favour of films and I lost touch with live theatre until the day I called into the Arts Theatre to get some information and was captivated by the Ulster Actor’s Company rehearsing ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ and ended up working here for about seven years. But again interest wained leaving only the main houses, the Lyric and the Opera House, there was very little else to choose from.
Thankfully, today there’s a new young breed of entertainers; creative producers, directors and actors have had to improvise, learn to survive on a shoe string thanks to the savage government cuts and slowly but surely these groups are building up a head of steam, Kabosh, Prime Cut, Replay, Big Telly, Bruiser, Cahoots and Tinderbox amongst them, all working to a budget to produce top class professional shows and by and large they succeed. But there’s been constant head scratching and searching for new ideas and one of the most original and effective comes from Kabosh.

Keiran Sloan , Sawyers Deli

After 20 years in business they have had their government support cut from £107.454 to £60.000 for the coming year. But, like their colleagues, these people have imaginations and are determined to keep providing culture to the people of Northern Ireland via the medium of the stage, and in this case the stages are the streets of Belfast
And so we come to Barney the Bap, milk of magnesia and hot chocolate, not the name of a production but part of the script that is ‘Belfast Bred’, a dramatic walking tour of the city’s cuisine from past to present. Although it seems a simple idea, it’s a very carefully crafted production with a director, a stage manager and actors. When I met up with the Belfast Bred walking tours last week, actor Stephen Beggs was at Sawer’s Deli in College Street about to embark on his debut performance resplendent In his chef’s whites, a bell and a telescope and chatting to his first client, Belfastman Edward Callaghan in the picture below.

 P1020349
Stephen takes on the character of Barney, a chef who worked on the RMS Titanic under the world famous Mr. Luigi Gatti manager of the five star Ritz Restaurant situated on B deck. Barney survived the tragedy, came home to his native Belfast and determined to gather all that is best of our produce to recreate a first class banquet in Belfast City Hall.
It’s a lot to ask a lone chef and a talkative one at that. He knows everything about our city and he is a mine of information, lovely stories and local historical facts, even about milk of magnesia and hot chocolate. But he needs help, he needs to gauge peoples likes and dislikes, he needs to check out our shops and hostelries to find the finest ingredients. And so he calls on the public, locals and visitors and for two and a half hours they walk Belfast assessing what’s on offer and discussing the history of the city. At 10.30 a.m. very Friday and Saturday (excluding 1st August), they meet at Sawers where Kieran Sloan and the staff are well prepared, move to the Mourne Seafood, onto John Hewitt and then the Potted Hen.

John Hewitt Bar Belfast

At the 300 year old McHughs Bar it’s boxty and rock steaks before finishing up at St. George’s Market, the place our Barney visited with his mummy when he was a wee boy. At each venue the bon viveurs are welcomed in and invited to sample the fare after which they can buy what they fancy and they do, everyone is a winner in this excellent morning’s entertainment.
£20 includes all the samples on offer and advice is book early and wear comfortable shoes. There’s wheelchair access and plenty of stops for rest and recuperation on the way round.
