We’ve been away sunning ourselves on the shores of Lake Garda in Northern Italy – just beautiful. The lifestyle suits the climate, first thing in the morning, at lunchtime and in the evening it was a case of enjoying a buffet of fruit, cold meats and salads before a meal usually of pasta or delicious chicken or lamb and light non stogy sweets – and wine. The variety of food in cafes and restaurants is wide but light and just right for doing very little but sitting and reading under a sun umbrella before cooling off in the pool. Ah well, all good things come to an end but we appreciate the sun shining this morning even if the air temperature is a shock to the system.

We were in the shadow of the Little Dolomites in Riva. What a spectacular setting, volcanic, sedimentary rocks, limestone giving so many colours and pictures within the sheer sides. The lake is the third biggest in Europe and we were right at the end where the water meets the foot of the cliffs. We watched hang gliders riding the thermals, eagles and herons doing the same thing and the warm winds provided a paradise for small sale boats and surfers. No wonder this area of Italy was popular with Sir Winston Churchill, D.H Lawrence, and Maria Callas lived there for several years.

On a boat trip we passed a beautiful island where Princess Diana and Prince Charles visited and I had a vision of Diana being handed off the private boat and ushered up through the palm trees and the Bougainvillea and into the cool marble hall of the castle.
You loose all track of time and of news from home. There was little interest in the one and only Daily Express at the foyer of the hotel and towards the end of the week I noticed a small paragraph about the resignation or side stepping of Peter Robinson. There was very little information and I laughed at Tim McGarry’s note on Face Book this morning.

I might have mentioned this before but the Ulster Youth Orchestra concert a few Saturdays ago was a very special night for both the audience and the orchestra, young people still at school coping with exams and rehearsals, young people who are the future musicians feeding all sorts of musical groups from philharmonic to bands and all between. What stuck me was how professional they are, smart, polished and happy. The studious red haired timpanist raised the roof with his aplomb as did 15 year old Donal McCann who was master of the Mulholland Organ during the Saint-Saens Symphony. It was also a treat for the audience, many of them family, brothers and sisters supporting their sibling musicians. One lady had primary school youngsters with her and I asked if they were studying music: “No but I want them to appreciate music as they grow up so I bring them to concerts like this.” What a great mother.
