The death of Brian Friel didn’t come as a shock but it did come as a body blow to those who knew him both inside the world of theatre and beyond. Glenties will be packed with well-wishers as he is buried later today.
He was an extraordinary wordsmith who fashioned his plays with skill and insight and they have travelled the stages of the world, given work to countless number of acting companies and challenged and entertainment his audience. Most recently Dancing at Lughnasa at the Lyric Theatre concentrated our minds on a semi autographical story and it will be an emotional night when it’s staged next week at the Dublin Theatre Festival. At the opening of the Festival Friel’s close friend actor Adrian Dunbar was close to tears when talking of the playwright’s illness and the awful thought of this mountain falling. Now three of the founder members Field Day Theatre Company have fallen, David Hammond, Seamus Heaney and now Brian Friel.
At the Lyric Theatre, where his presence will live on thanks to the outstanding painting by Colin Davidson, they are planning to mark the passing of the man who spoke with such eloquence at the opening of the refurbished theatre in May 2011. He offered a secular prayer.
“I pray that this house never forgets that it is a playhouse, a house of play; and that laughter and merrymaking and wit and comedy and raucous fun and plain ordinary giddiness and silly giggling must be accommodated and indeed encouraged. Because a solemn theatre is a dead theatre.”
He finished by praying for creative, people who donate their lives to that “strange and almost secret pursuit we call theatre.” He added: “I pray that they will find their reward in putting us in touch again with our heedless souls, of lifting the veil again on those neglected values that we need to embrace if we are to be fully human. I solemnly pray that they will indeed find great, great reward in that unique venture. Amen.”
Another week of dreadful world news and it’s not so good at home either. Then along comes the Super Moon and the spooky eclipse. Watching this happen makes the mere mortal feel very small and insignificant. And then we’ve have the beautiful weather which is very easy to get used to. A sunflower appear in the garden and a strange plant in the green house which I pulled out and binned because it looked suspicious – on investigation it appears that birds are taking seeds from bird feeders and distributing them around our gardens. The tomatoes are wonderful this year, and like the weather, when it’s all over they will be sorely missed. A case of winter drawers on next week!
No Business Like Show Business
A lot of action on the theatre scene this week.
Once in a while you can just sit back and be swept along with the enthusiasm, the music, the acting and the story and leave the theatre well satisfied with a song in your heart.
That’s Annie Get Your Gun at the Theatre at the Mill and this glorious show runs until next Saturday. On that day there’s also a matinee at 2.30 in the afternoon and this is a ‘relaxed performance’ suitable for children with autism or learning disabilities and it will feature adapted lighting and lowered sound levels and it’s lovely because the audience is free to talk and move around the auditorium if they wish. Other facilities include accessible seating and bathroom facilities and a hearing loop. The story of Annie Oakley and her rise to fame and fortune is available ahead of the performance either by email or in printed form.
Most people will know Annie’s story, the tearaway young woman who feeds her sisters and brother by shooting birds and rabbits for the pot. They have nothing, no learnin’ and no social graces but in fact, Annie has something worth it’s weight in gold, a sharp shooters eye and reactions. She falls in with Buffalo Bill Cody who realises her potential when she beats his star attraction, handsome Frank Butler, in a shoot off at the country fair. She joins his Wild West show, leaves her buckskin dress behind, dons a fine white custom and falls in love with Frank. However, there’s big time rivalry, they argue, fall out, split, are reunited and despite her desire to be the genteel lady Frank is looking for, she still has that feisty side to her and he discovers he loves it – and her.
This production directed by Peter Corry has all the basics of the story but he embellishes it in a most exciting way, he paints beautiful pictures on stage, one of the loveliest is when Annie is singing her siblings to sleep and the cast gather round as the band in the corner plays ‘Moonshine Lullaby’.
I don’t recall ever seeing such a talented cast. Led by George Jones as Buffalo Bill, living every moment of the character and obviously enjoying every minute, the leads are two excellent performers from Scotland, Kara Swinney and Blair Robertson. Kara thank goodness adopts the Ethel Mermann, (star of the original Broadway show in 1946) approach rather than Betty Hutton, (star of the 1950 film) and belts out the numbers where appropriate yet in ‘Falling In Love’ she is ‘soft and pink as a nursery’. Interesting that the MGM film was to star Judy Garland but there was trouble on set and she was replaced by Betty Hutton.
Howard Keel played her love interest, so handsome and such a voice and I’m glad to say Blair is every inch a Howard Keel and earned himself a new fan club at Tuesday’s opening night. These young people, many from the London stage and the junior members of the cast drawn from local talent – and they are fabulous – act, sing, dance, play a dozen instruments between them, and play them exceedingly well. They are full of energy and like George, obviously enjoy working with each other and want to please their audience. They all establish eye contact with us, invite us into their fun and games as members of the Wild West Show – ‘The Best in the World’.
This is billed as a new production and it certainly is, little hints of Chicago, a touch of Cabaret, a wonderful hoe-down and towards the end the famous number, ‘Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better’ shows off the vocal skills of the lead performers and their breath control.
Congratulations to Peter and producer Bernard Clarkson, music director Matthew Reeve, choreographer Fleur Mellor, designer David Craig and lighting designer, Conleth White.

“I couldn’t sleep for thinking of that little suitcase. It haunted me. My first motivation for writing this play was simply to get a night’s sleep.”
This decision took journalist and playwright Jane Coyle on a remarkable journey of research and imagination. Her new play, her second, is simply called The Suitcase and the foundations of the story began last year when Jane and her husband Padraig were on holiday in Austria; in Vienna they called into the Jewish Museum and in this modern building, full of space and light with glass cases holding memories of the Holocaust, she came face to face with the subject of the play that will be premiered at the Belfast International Arts Festival on 12th October 2015. It was in this setting that Jane saw the single suitcase that had such an effect on her.
“I’ve always been interested in the story of the Jewish communities in Europe and in Austria I discovered the story of the once thriving and respected community in Vienna.”
The entry of Hitler’s army in 1938 resulted in unprecedented suffering and hardship for Vienna’s Jews who experienced extreme and brutal violence, fascist racial laws deprived them of their civil rights, many thousands were deported in most cases to Auschwitz-Birkenau, Trieste and Terezin. Over 65,000 Austrian Jews were murdered in these camps.
The suitcase in the Jewish Museum was brought home to Vienna by a survivor of Terezin concentration camp. It had belonged to Frieda Jacobowitz of Berlin who’d written her name and address on it, not once but twice such was her belief that she would return home at some time. It wasn’t to be. Today the little case resides in the Museum for people to wonder at the story it has to tell.
For Jane the story might well have been set closer to home. In her fictional storyline, Holocaust survivor Leo Edelmann comes to live in Belfast carrying his few possessions in a suitcase which was hidden away and only discovered when the old man dies. We learn how Leo came to work in the textile trade at the end of the war, met his wife and settled down. As he hid the suitcase he also hid his darkest memories, a man who appeared larger than life unable to leave his traumatic past behind.
After his death his daughter Sofie and granddaughter Galina clear out his house. They find the suitcase with a name and address written on it – Galina Stein Vienna. Sofie recalls that it was her father who chose the name Galina for his granddaughter, but who was this woman and what was her relationship to Leo? So mother and daughter explore the past and their present, as Jane puts it, three little pools of light as she writes of the memories of three generations that all come together over a battered brown suitcase and a woman’s name – Galina.
The cast and production team are young practitioners already making a name for themselves outside Northern Ireland. Producer Ciara McCafferty and director Eilise McNicholas are co-founders of Chatterbox Productions and drama graduates from Queen’s University. For the past year Eilise has been in London completing a post graduate course in directing at Mountview Academy of Dramatic Arts and recently worked as assistant director on a production for the Volta Festival in London. Ciara, who has produced all Chatterbox’s production, was production manager on two shows at the Edinburgh Fringe and will be travelling to Hong Kong with one of these productions immediately after The Suitcase.
An accomplished cast includes Rosie Barry, Mary Moulds and Seán O’Hare and Hannah Coyle who leaves for Paris after the run of The Suitcase to take up an Acting in English course at the European Drama School and says she may well stay in Paris as she feels there are more opportunities there for English speaking performers, particularly as English language theatre is very much on the up. It’s interesting that In France creative people are paid by the government to support their work, obviously in France culture is nurtured and respected in a way that the arts community in the UK and Ireland can only dream about.
To mark the 70th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and Belsen concentration camps, a rehearsed reading of Jane’s play was held during the Holocaust Memorial Day commemorations in January at the invitation of Katy Radford of the Institute for Conflict Research in Belfast.
The Suitcase, a Spring Lane & Chatterbox production, will be presented in association with the Jews Schmooze programme and the Institute for Conflict Research at the Belfast Synagogue and there will be an audience discussion after each of the matinee and evening performances. The Sadness of Death
Every death is a tragedy to someone and for women who loose their husbands it means the person who is closest of all has gone, the boy she met and fell in love with, setting up home planning the future.
“Till it happens no one knows what it’s like.”
Marie is in her early 60s and 13 years ago after an idyllic marriage her husband died.
“Ken was ill and I worried about him dying but you don’t think it will really happen. When it did I’d done most of my grieving, at least I thought I had. People said it was a good thing he had gone and was out of his suffering, they said he had moved on to another better place, they said we’d meet up again some day. I have a religious belief but those words didn’t help me at all, all I wanted was my Ken back again.”
We were sitting in the sun and over a cup of coffee she did a lot of reminiscing of the time he died and her pain was still apparent.
“What did help were the little signs I believe he sent me during the first year, right up until his ashes were scattered over the country side where he grew up. As he lay dying our cat sat with him in his room. Then, when he moved onto a hospital bed at the end, the cat lay beside him and Ken seemed to get some comfort. On the day he died, the cat lay along the length of him without moving, from early morning until 8 o’clock in the evening when Ken took his last breath. Only then did the cat leave the bed, walked out of the room and outside to sit under a bush looking up at the window. From that time she seemed to know when I was really sad and either sat beside me on the chair or climbed onto my knee. “
On another occasion Marie (not her real name) was having friends to the house on Ken’s first anniversary, a lovely day so they decided to have a barbecue. “There wasn’t a breath of wind and we sat under the big sun umbrella talking about Ken and remembering the good days when suddenly the umbrella lifted up out of its holder, into the air then rolled across the garden. I believe he was saying hello.”
Although the little signs she attributed to her late husband helped her to feel he was still around, it didn’t help alleviate the loneliness and the pain.
“I loved my close friends for their support but I noticed I was left off invitation lists, I suspect hostesses thought I might be an attraction for the male guests and a threat to their partners. That might sound boastful but I was young, reasonable presentable and very lonely.”
Another middle-aged widow told me how she had stopped to talk to a neighbour about his garden when his wife came out of the house and accused her of trying to ‘chat up’ her husband. “It was dreadfully hurtful and I found it hard to go out for a walk again, certainly not past that house.”
Eventually Marie discovered she wasn’t the only widow amongst the people she knew and gradually they formed a group who were determined not to be isolated because they’d lost the person they loved best in the world.
“It was like a punishment! We all felt some people turned their backs on us when we lost our husbands, wouldn’t even cross the road to speak, I suppose because they didn’t know what to say, why can’t people get over their own embarrassment and think of us, a word is all we need to feel included, at worst a wave, at best a chat about what’s happened naming our husbands and asking directly how we’re getting on. And don’t say ‘I understand what you’re going through’ unless you’ve been in the same boat.”
Her doctor told Marie it would take two years to come to terms with Ken’s death. “It was a real heartache, a physical pain. When everyone left after the funeral and I went to bed and cried sore when the realisation hit that I’d no one to lie beside anymore. The letters and cards arrived and I looked through them but didn’t really take them in. The comfort they gave me came a couple of years later when I was strong enough to open the box and re-read them. Please, never think it’s too late to write or to phone, even to call, it makes all the difference.”
It’s wise, however, to think about what you’ll say. A printed card is adequate but make it personal, add your own message, mention the name of the husband or wife. You might have a nice photograph you could include, but wrap it round with a sheet of paper and make a note on it: ‘You might like this photo of ….’ In that way it won’t be a shock to see the face of a beloved husband staring at your when you open the card or letter.
Of course Marie had warning of Ken’s death, he’d been diagnosed with cancer and she was able to nurse him for the last few weeks. It’s a different story after a sudden or tragic death but the same guidelines apply, don’t ignore it, that widow, or widower, needs a lot of support – from everyone. Just because you aren’t close doesn’t matter. I remember when my grandmother died a wreath was derived to the door and the young man looked me in the eye and said: “I’m sorry for your trouble.” I know he meant it and I found it strangely comforting. It was recognition of my sorrow and that’s what’s necessary, be it a hug, a card, a phone call or a handwritten letter, even an arm round the shoulder. Important too is practical help, offer to do what you can, perhaps shop, perhaps make some phone calls. It takes imagination and determination to put that bereaved person before your own reluctance to get involved. It’s appreciated.
