But what were those to presenters thinking of? Everyone was dressed so carefully and beautifully and I really thought the costume department would have payed the same attention to Tess and Claudia. Anyway, it’s over for another year and no doubt it will be the same format in 2016. Will the judges be the same? Deborah Doherty with Zodwa Mtembo who was forcibly removed from her home in Roosboom near Ladysmith
by the apartheid regime and has now returned to what is left of her land to try to rebuild
her home, her church and her community.
70 years in business and still going strong. Christian Aid was formed after the Second World War when British and Irish church leaders determined to help destitute European refugees, not by preaching but by practical support regardless of their faith. Since then this hugely effective charity has never been out of work as the need just keeps on coming and they keep delivering.
Deborah Doherty, Christian Aid Ireland’s head of Church and Community explained that in May 1945 more than £3 million in today’s money was raised in one weekend. “It was used to buy bicycles and boats so that pastors could minister to their people, to provide food and medical supplies, to help refugees rebuild their lives, to find teachers and equip schools so that lives could begin to return to normal.”
Since then the organisation has worked in 43 different countries taking practical action with local partners to help people pull themselves out of poverty; and it has sought to challenge and change the systems and structures that make and keep people poor because the churches believe there can be no healthy ecumenical fellowship without practical solidarity.
It’s a history to be proud of.
In the 1950s Christian Aid helped to set up Voluntary Service Overseas. In the 60s the charity helped create the Disasters Emergency Committee. 1970 saw television reports on famine in Pakistan, Sudan and Ethiopia, these focused public attention on the biblical scale of the tragedy as did wars in Vietnam and Laos. Events like Live Aid in the 80s stirred the public consciousness further and Christian Aid was at the forefront of challenging governments on economic issues then, in the 2000s, they brought news that almost half of the worlds population live on less than $2 a day, less than £1.50; this surprised the public and stimulated giving and saw the setting up of the Fair Trade Foundation. What Deborah loves about her work is that Christian Aid is addressing some of the root causes of poverty, conflict, gender inequality, climate change by supporting people to bring about change in their own lives and so have their voices heard.
“I’ve visited our projects in Mali, where we fund market gardens in one of the driest places on earth, the Dogon Plateau at the edge of the Sahara Desert. I’ve had the opportunity to meet Dalit women in India who are living with HIV yet give their time to ensure that other women are educated in HIV prevention and care. I’ve seen the amazing work which Christian Aid supports with refugees in isolated communities in South Sudan, people who have spent so much of their lives living through a dreadful civil war.”
What is a refugee?
A refugee is someone with no choice in their future, someone who is forced to seek refuge because of circumstances, as Deborah points out, just as Jesus and his family had to do when they fled Bethlehem to Egypt for safety when King Herod declared he’d kill all the infants of that land. A migrant on the other hand is someone who chooses to leave home for economic reasons, usually to seek work.
“Our goal is to bring an end to poverty and that is as relevant today as 70 years ago although it’s not getting any easier such are the tragedies of the world. In Afghanistan parents are selling their daughters into marriage to earn the money so the family can survive, life expectancy for women in Zimbabwe is now 34 years of age – it was 65 a decade ago.”
And multinational companies still take advantage in poverty stricken lands.
Although working in so many different countries, much of the focus today is working with refugees however, as Deborah points out, it isn’t just the current Syrian situation where communities are coming under stress and are in great need. Equally serious are conditions in South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo with a shift in population as people try to escape one danger zone only to stray into another. “Just because displaced people end up in a refugee camp doesn’t mean they are safe or secure,” she adds. “There’s gender based violence, sickness spreads rapidly, women with small children and babies and the elderly are particularly vulnerable. Just imagine being forced to leave all you have built and come to love, your community, family and friends, children being taken away from school, turning away from your countryside to trek miles in difficult conditions, often having to endure horrific boat journeys to get to a new country where you know no one and have nothing but the clothes you stand up in.”
Human Rights
Where people are deprived of the complex issue of their human rights, Christian Aid and their partners are in the forefront of lobbying and supporting. Deborah has recently returned from South Africa where she was visiting projects working on land reform to restore the land back into the ownership of the black population. But government land reforms state that land handed over needs to be retained as an economic asset, for example if orange trees were growing there originally, orange tress must be replaced despite the fact that there is a massive housing need. “And there are 600 abandoned gold mines that are poisoning the land and the mining waste is pouring into the rivers making them radio active. We are aiming to provide a safe environment for the communities by challenging the powerful mining companies to safely dispose of their waste, but there are no quick fixes, no sticking plaster solution will work there.” So the challenge continues.
How will the charity mark their first 70 years?
“We cannot celebrate the end of poverty, but we can give thanks for hope given in times of despair, for lives changed in positive ways, for exposing injustice and misuse of power, for standing alongside the poor and for giving the voiceless a voice.”

Not in every household. For lots of people these days bring the heartache of unemployment, a frightening future, illness and despair for what might have been.
