Another Romance
Congratulations to Betty Scott on her BEM, acknowledging all her work for charity and theatre, most especially the Lady Taverners. Her journey from London to Belfast is a fascinating one as I discovered when I interviewed her for my book, Standby Studio.
Born of Cockney parents, her father was manager of Mr. Teesey Weesey’s salon and hairdresser to the glitterati. She moved to Blackpool and would have been a big singing star if she hadn’t lost her heart to this handsome budding impresario from Belfast. It was 1962 when, in true showbiz fashion he saw her perform in a Blackpool club. Alf Scott made his way backstage, invited her to dinner and so enthralled was she that she gave up a promising career. She turned her back on a BBC contract for her own television show, travelling the world singing with the combined service entertainment and the possibility of a part on the West End stage.
It was a remarkable love story for a girl who won a talent show at 12, was a Carroll Levis discovery, who at 16 turned down an invitation from Richard Attenborough saying she wanted to sing more than she wanted to act. She shared the bill with Anne Shelton, Tommy Cooper, Arthur English and Vic Oliver but the main man was Alf Scott, her husband for 30 years and without doubt, the love of her life. So Betty Foe became Betty Scott, soon to be instrumental in spicing up Belfast’s entertainment circles.
During those years Alf brought the stars to Belfast and on their way to the famous Boom Boom Room they would stop off at Ulster Television where I first met Betty. The opening night of the club was memorable. Mounted police controlled the crowds who had turned out to see the guests. They all wanted to be seen at the new club. Johnny Ray, Bill Haley and his Comets, Gerry and the Pacemakers with hosts David Jacobs and Pete Murray.
“Show bands were big at that time, we had the Miami from Dublin and Dickie Rock, we worked alongside the late Jim Aiken and he continued the big showbiz tradition long after Alf died. Lulu did her first gig outside Scotland with us. Then we opened the Tonic Cinema in Bangor for variety shows. That was where I fell in love with Glen Campbell but Alfie understood! Dear Danny La Rue, who died in June 2009 was such a lovely performer, brought the house down.” She reels off the names. “Jean Vincent, Gerry Marsden and the Pacemakers, Adam Faith who’d just bought his brother a butcher’s shop and the John Barry Seven, I remember John writing arrangements over the dinner table just like we’d write a postcard.”
Looking back to the early 60s it seems incredible that Alf Scott was able to put Belfast on the map with such style. Of course, it worked both ways, the artist got exposure on television and a lucrative booking before a massive and enthusiastic audience and we got the excitement.
I remember Frankie Vaughan singing Give me the Moonlight and kicking his leg in our small studio before his show in the Boom Boom Room. I mentioned to Betty how we felt he was very brusque with members of the Boys’ Clubs who gathered to get their president’s autograph as he left the building.
“That’s not Frankie, he must have been in a hurry to get down to us for rehearsal. It was his main charity and he was very good to them, the nicest kindest man you could meet.” An example of how lasting a first impression can be.
Alf continued to develop the scene – the New Vic, the Tonic, the Regal in Larne, the Royal Avenue. He brought us the Rolling Stones who appeared at the Ulster Hall on one occasion and had to be smuggled out to safety via the back door and into a meat truck such was the frenzy of the young women. Joe Brown and the Brovvers, Marty Wilde, Englebert Humperdinck – when he answered to Arnold George Dorsey – Cilla Black, Billy Cotton with Kathy Kay and the dreaded Roy Orbison. Dreaded to me. I saw that show in the Ulster Hall and when he sang Only the Lonely I took an instant dislike to the man and that dislike remained. Why? Because he had stuffed, reputedly, a Coca Cola bottle down the front of his tight white pants! Someone else was sure it was a badminton shuttlecock but overheard was the comment which summed it up, “whatever that is, it ain’t natural!” The gesture backfired because lot of girls found it an absolute turn off.
On the other hand Little Richard rocked the Boom Boom Room to its foundations in one of the best gigs of them all, and Jerry Lee Lewis will never be forgotten for his rendition of Great Balls of Fire.
“When Dion Warwick came for dinner after her show, she went off with my collection of tweed hats and Jack Jones sang Impossible Dream to me over a glass of wine.” That’s what it was like, these big stars jetted in and out creating a wonderful rainbow round the town – they had the ‘wow’ factor.
Alf died on their 30th wedding anniversary in January 1992. It is testament to his memory that shortly after his death Betty held a celebrity gala in his honour to raise £200,000 for an intensive cancer therapy unit for Belvoir Park Hospital. A ten-piece orchestra, 100 artists, many of them from those days in the 1960s, and not one person asked for a penny piece in payment. She doesn’t talk a lot about her award-winning work with the RoSPA Tufty Clubs teaching children road safety, her work with the ratepayers association, her time as a toy lady at the Royal Victoria Hospital or chairing the Lady Taverners of Northern Ireland raising money for mentally and physically disabled children. Interviewing Betty Scott is like peeling an elegant vivacious onion. There are layers and layers of interest and memories and just as you think you’re getting to the heart of the matter, there’s more. Then you do get to the heart and, just for a brief instant, there’s a tear.

Sobering words from Angela Thompson executive director of Reconnect, a voluntary organisation that provides training and rehabilitation services to adults with acquired brain injury to support them back into society and employment.
An acquired brain injury is one which happens after birth; whether it occurs in childhood or adulthood, a split second can have a devastating effect on both the individual and the family. Such an injury is a lifelong condition although depending on the type of injury sustained, there may be limited improvement.
It’s more common that people realise and can be the result of a fall, road traffic accident, assault, tumour or stroke, to name only a few reasons. A seemingly simple trip at home resulting in a blow to the head could lead to irreparable damage and trauma and several recent tragedies have highlighted the potential danger of contact sports.
High in the Castlereagh Hills is Reconnect, a custom built, one storey, long and low building housing a craft and floristry studio, meeting areas, a variety of training rooms and the jewel in the crown, three glass houses where seedlings are brought on, window boxes made and filled and hanging baskets planted, all for sale to the public to help raise much-needed funds for materials, specialist equipment and new projects.
When I visited last week, one lady explained she suffered her injury because of a clot, a young man was knocked down by a car, another fell from a ladder. All have been left with varying degrees of disability but they told me, everyone who attends Reconnect benefits from the programmes on offer. Social interaction is important such as a trip to the supermarket, writing a shopping list, selecting products and paying for them is something most of us take for granted, for the men and women I talked to it’s a real achievement. Most of those attending Reconnect are collected and dropped home by the Reconnect minibus, another essential part of the service as maintaining any degree of independence can be very difficult for someone with an injury which can affect memory, speech, mobility and self esteem.
“Their whole lives are stripped away by their injury,” Angela explained, “so as well as being physically injured, there are potential mental health issues to consider. One of our primary focuses is to help build confidence and bring something positive back into their lives. We work closely with the families and the Community Brain Injury Teams so if we have any concerns regarding a client’s wellbeing, we can address issues at an early stage.”
The range of activities at the Lisnabreeny Road East centre is all embracing with three main departments – horticulture, essential skills and the supported employment project. Clients can select accredited and non-accredited training modules which can help them to re-learn lost skills; working with qualified tutors and trainers they cover a wide variety of subjects from literacy to citizenship before going on to take accreditations.
Programmes are tailored to suit each person’s interests and capabilities. After his injury, one gentlemen, fondly referred to as the ‘artist in residence’ discovered a remarkable ability with oil paints and his pictures adorn the walls of rooms and corridors. Another lady decorates chimney pots, for others it might be embroidery or card making. Cooking is also popular as it not only challenges the brain but is an important step forward on the path toward more independent living. One young man gave me great recipes for soups and he told me his wish is to become a professional chef and the monthly Saturday club provides him the opportunity to practice his skills! In the grounds, foundations have been laid for a new workshop and the building will be completed within the next few months opening up new training opportunities.
The glass houses are a big attraction and are always busy. When I was there, re-potting was going on, dead-heading shrubs and filling hanging baskets. This is the heart of the place here horticulture manager Caroline Lennon guides her gardeners through the seasons bringing about positive changes to the lives of people living with disabilities.
“This is best job in the world ever,’ she told me, ‘here you see a miracle happening every day.”
As well as the many training activities which take place on site, the football team ‘play away’ on Wednesday afternoons and on Thursday, a group of clients attend the gym at Belvoir Activity Centre where a personal trainer puts them through their paces! There are community activities, as well as regular outings to places of interest, Reconnect is a hive of activity and a happy place.
Funding for charities is always a problem and in recent times Angela and her colleagues have spent many long hours in the conference room, renamed the War Room, working on complex application forms in the hope of attracting funding to ensure the long-term sustainability of the organisation and the ambitious outreach programmes they plan.
Although Reconnect acknowledge and are grateful for the support of the Health and Social Care Board and the Belfast Trust, in reality they don’t know how long their core funding contracts will last. Long term planning is possible only on paper as there’s only so much in the Northern Ireland pot to be shared amongst many worthy causes. However, any uncertainly around funding hasn’t stopped the organisation from moving forward with its plans for service improvement and expansion.
“The clients remain at the heart of what we do,” Angela confirmed. “Their needs and wishes will help shape our future and we’ll continue to deliver a quality service which is varied, meaningful and allows each individual to achieve their maximum potential.”
